Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste

The El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF) is located at 3255 Akers Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80922.  Call 719-520-7878 for information.
Typical household hazardous waste is accepted from El Paso and Teller County residents at no charge.
Appointment required. Check for the most up to date information, drop off rules,  and hours of operation

Normal Trash Service on Presidents' Day

As a reminder, Waste Management will provide normal trash service on February 16th, the Presidents' Day holiday.

Items You Can't Throw in the Trash

There are seven items in Colorado that can get you in some trouble if you are caught throwing them in the trash or dumping them at the landfill. These items include:
  1. Asbestos (including linoleum tiles containing asbestos from older homes)
  2. Explosives
  3. Ammunition
  4. Commercial Chemicals or Commercial Quantities (Business Waste)
  5. Bio-Waste (Medical Waste) and medicines and prescriptions
  6. Sharps (needles)
  7. Electronics
More specifically - Items NOT accepted through our Waste Management Service include:
  • Unknown or unlabeled materials 
  • Bulky items and furniture
  • Incandescent light bulbs
  • Appliances: washing  machines, vacuums,  tools, or refrigerators, 
  • Tires
  • Liquid mercury
  • Radioactive items
  •  Containers over 5 gallons
  • Leaking or empty containers
  • Smoke detectors 
  •  Lamp fixtures
  • Construction related materials
  • Items improperly packaged for  transportation 
  • Household Chemicals - Ammonia, cleaning compounds, bleach, floor stripper, drain cleaner, rust remover, carpet/upholstery cleaner, tile/shower cleaner, and more
  • Automotive Products - Antifreeze, motor oil, oil filters, fluids, polish, waxes, vehicle batteries, upholstery cleaners, and more
  • Consumer Electronics - Computers, laptops, keyboards, monitors, microwaves, DVD/CD players, CD ROM, fax machines, cell phones, VCRs, desktop printers, scanners, gaming systems, related cords, and more
  • Paint Products - Oil-based paint, latex paint, spray paint, artist paint, wood preservative, stain, caulk, sealer and more
  • Batteries - Batteries of various sizes: AA, AAA, C, D and rechargeable.
  • Garden Chemicals - Herbicide, insect spray/ insecticide, fertilizer, pesticide, and more
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs - Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and straight fluorescent tubes
  • Thermometers and thermostats - Numerous items that contain mercury
  • Flammable Items - Kerosene, gasoline, solvents and more
  • Syringes and Lancets - Sharps, syringes, needles and lancets
  • Swimming Pool Chemicals - Pool acid, stabilizer, chlorine

Trash is picked up every  Monday and recycle is every other Monday on the gold weeks.

SERVICE GUIDELINES
• To confirm your collection day, go to wm.com, open the Schedule & ETA link at the top and enter your home address. • Place your WM recycling and trash carts at the curb by 7 a.m. -- wheels facing the curb.
• Place carts at least 3 feet from other objects such as cars, mailboxes, trees and other carts.
• Ensure all material fits inside your carts with the lids fully closed. Break down cardboard boxes.
• Do not leave any materials next to or on top of your cart. Excess materials will not be collected.     

HOLIDAY WEEK REMINDER
• If your service day falls on or after a holiday being observed by your local  WM collection team, your service that week MIGHT be delayed by one day.
• Regular service resumes the following week.
• The week prior to each holiday customers can confirm their holiday week schedule at wm.com. No login needed - open the Schedule & ETA link at the top and enter your home address to confirm.

$5 suggested minimum donation benefits community youth development non-profit organizations. Donations can also be made at givebutter.com/tree!

TREES ONLY - No stands, stand spikes, garland, plastic, twine, lights, etc.
Personal drop-off only - no commercial drop-offs

Mulch can be picked up at the following locations:
  • Colorado Springs Utilities Leon Young Service Center, 1521 S. Hancock Expressway
  • City of Colorado Springs Forestry, 1601 Recreation Way (on west side of street)
