Basic Bike Safety

4/14/2022

Per Colorado Springs City Code - Whenever any person is operating a bicycle, skateboard, roller skates, or similar device upon a sidewalk, the person shall yield the right of way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing the pedestrian.
Article 19 Operation of Bicycles

It's important to adopt safe cycling practices. A series of videos produced by The League of American Bicyclists will help you develop your knowledge of bicycling safety. For more tips and techniques to improve your ride, watch all of the Smart Cycling Videos (link is external) available on The League's website.

Rules of the Road
  • Always ride with the flow of traffic
  • Obey traffic laws, signs and signals
  • When passing a bicyclist, motorized vehicles are required to provide 3 feet of clearance
  • Use hand signals when turning, slowing or stopping
  • Ride single file
  • Give an audible signal before passing a pedestrian or another cyclist
  • Use a headlight, taillight and reflectors at night
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • NEVER assume that motorist see you or that you have the right of way. Expect the unexpected.
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Control your speed and obey speed regulations. Slow down and use caution when approaching or overtaking other trail users.
  • Don’t block the trail. Groups should be in a single file when other trail users are present and should never use more than one-half of the trail to allow for the flow of traffic
  • Stay on existing trails and don’t create any new ones.
