Snow Shoveling & Snow Blower Safety

11/15/2024

The National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely:
  • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
  • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
  • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter
  • Push the snow rather than lifting it
  • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
  • Lift with your legs, not your back
  • Do not work to the point of exhaustion
  • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts

Snow Blower Safety
In addition to possible heart strain from pushing a heavy snow blower, be safe with these tips:
  • If the blower jams, turn it off
  • Keep your hands away from the moving parts
  • Be aware of the carbon monoxide risk of running a snow blower in an enclosed space
  • Add fuel outdoors, before starting, and never add fuel when it is running
  • Never leave it unattended when it is running

Be a Snow Angel: Help keep sidewalks clear

11/15/2024

What does it mean to be a "Snow Angel"?

This winter, help those in need by becoming a "Snow Angel" and ensure everyone's sidewalk is clear of ice and snow, providing safe access for pedestrian commuters - especially school children. The program backed by the Council of Neighbors and Organizations (CONO), local schools, city agencies, neighborhood organizations, and Bike Colorado Springs, asks that residents comply with the City snow/ice removal ordinance and encourages them to take the additional step to help out neighbors in need of assistance with snow removal.

The City ordinance on snow/ice removal requires residents to remove ice and snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of a snow storm.  The best way to help is by being a "Snow Angel" and aiding your neighbors in need of snow removal assistance. Volunteering is greatly appreciated and is a wonderful way to get to know those in your neighborhood while keeping our children and pedestrians safe.

Ways you can be a Snow Angel:
• Remove snow and ice from all sidewalks adjacent to your property, including sidewalks on the side of your home if you reside on a corner lot and, in some cases, the sidewalk behind your property if it backs up to a street.
• Ensure sidewalks are free of ice within 24 hours of a storm's end.
• If you are unable to clear your sidewalk, ask a neighbor or family member for help. Or, to find snow removal services, please search the internet for snow removal services or check with your neighborhood organization.
• Offer to clear your neighbor's sidewalk if they are elderly, disabled, or simply unable to perform the task.
• If a neighbor has repeatedly failed to clear their sidewalk please contact the City at 385-5977.
• Review the City ordinance for more information regarding required clearing of snow/ice removal on sidewalks.

Contact information: Residents who would like more information on how to start a Snow Angel program in their neighborhood should contact CONO. For residents who are unable to clear their sidewalks, you may also contact CONO, and they will check to see if there is a Snow Angel program in your neighborhood. CONO can be reached at 719-471-3105 or by email at contactcscono.org.

Winter Storm Preparation

11/15/2024

When the National Weather Service  forecasts several inches of snow and frigid temperatures, you can take these steps now to prepare for the storm and use energy wisely. This will help ensure reliable power supply for the area and help lower your bill.

Before the storm
  • Create an emergency kit with water, food, first-aid supplies and more.
  • Create/update an emergency plan with current emergency contact information.
  • Stay informed by following Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) on Facebook and Twitter.
  • If you do experience an outage, report and track it on their outage map.
  • You can also call   Colorado Springs Utilities (719) 448-4800 to report an outage.

Act now to save later
  • Set your thermostat no higher than 68 degrees. Turn it down a few more degrees when sleeping or away from your home for more than eight hours.
  • Check your furnace filter, replace if dirty. A clean filter allows your furnace to run more efficiently.
  • Cover drafty windows with plastic film or use insulated drapes or shades.
  • Refrain from using large appliances like washers and dishwashers unless necessary on extra cold days. When needed, only wash full loads and use the cold setting on your clothes washer.
  • Open blinds on all south-facing windows to let the sun naturally heat your home.
  • Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
  • Leave your faucet dripping and open cabinet doors around plumbing to allow warm air in and protect pipes from freezing.

Do Not Leave Unattended Vehicles Running

11/15/2024

Unattended Running Vehicles "Puffing" Rules
  • Per Colorado law, you cannot leave an unattended vehicle running UNLESS it has a remote start and you take adequate security measures (i.e. the vehicle requires a key to put the vehicle into gear and move the vehicle; you keep the keyless start fob out of proximity of the vehicle;  or you employ a steering wheel security devices.)
  • Unattended running vehicles are very attractive to criminals.
