Trim Bushes and Trees for Safety

9/26/2025

Now is a good time to help your neighbors by ensuring the foliage at your home does not impede movement or visibility.

Maintain tree branches at 8 feet above sidewalks and 14 feet over streets which keeps branches from impacting pedestrians walking on the sidewalks and keeps vehicles free from being hindered/scratched in the roads.  If your trees are located close to a street corner and/or a stop sign, you may need to trim your branches a bit more to avoid visually impacting a driver's ability to see the oncoming traffic or street sign.

2.3.2 BUSHES AND FLOWERS Trim bushes to maintain a pleasant shape and to not intrude on sidewalks or the road. Remove dead bushes and flowers and replace with like kind/number.

2.3.3 TREES Tree branches may not dip lower than 8 feet along sidewalks and 14 feet next to the street. Remove dead trees and their stumps, and usually replace with a new tree as soon as possible. Tree sprouts at the base of the former tree or tree suckers are not an acceptable tree replacement. Tree removal and replacement require a DRR.

Keeping Pets Safe Near Wildlife

9/26/2025

Although it is fairly rare, pets can sometimes look like prey to predators, especially if pets are roaming free where predators hunt for food. Whether at night or during daytime hours, all pets should be under control — preferably leashed, kenneled or kept indoors. Pets that are outside a secure location at night, or not accompanied by humans, may appear more like prey.

How to Protect Your Pets
To help prevent unwanted pet-wildlife conflicts, it’s best to take preventative measures to protect your pets.
  • Always supervise your pet when outside, especially at dawn or dusk.
  • Don't feed pets outside or leave pet food outside.
  • Never leave cats or dogs unattended outside after dark.
  • If you must leave your pet outside, secure it in a fully enclosed kennel.
  • Keep your dog in a fenced yard — but be aware a fence alone may not prevent wildlife from visiting.
  • Keep your pets up to date on vaccinations.

Report Potholes / Maintain Concrete

9/26/2025

There are increasing issues with concrete damage and street potholes.  For all city streets in PCVA, homeowners can report pothole issues on the GoCOS! website, https://coloradosprings.gov/public-works/page/concrete-maintenance.

Homeowners must maintain the concrete adjacent to their homes, specifically sidewalks and driveways.  These areas should be kept free of damage, holes, degradation, and major heaves between sidewalk slabs.

Visit https://coloradosprings.gov/public-works/page/concrete-maintenance and learn about the City  “cost share” program, where the homeowner and the City can split the costs of severe sidewalk repairs.

Why is this important to the homeowners, if the City has the responsibility to maintain our sidewalks?  From the website:  “Even though property owners are not responsible for the maintenance of the concrete adjacent to their property, property owners are not relieved of any legal liability regarding their sidewalk. If they are willing to pay half the cost of repairing the concrete, the work can be expedited.”
